Unshackled Echo ~ February 6, 2019 ~ Positively Delusional

We can train ourselves to be positive, to think positively, to see the best in any and every situation to the point where we don't see what isn't good, positive, hopeful, etc. Sound good? It might, because we have been called to worship at the altar of positive thinking for some time now. It is good to see the best that we can in situations and people, to be able to find the silver lining in the little black rain cloud, to be able to give thanks and be grateful in the midst of all circumstances. That last one is even a spiritual mandate. But it's not good to look at the bright side of life to such an extent that we lose touch with reality. Being positively delusional is not the answer to the stress and anxiety of life or to the sadness and pain that comes with distance in our relationship with our Creator.

Earlier this week my wife and I returned home from a visit with her family in the Austin area. About halfway home we reached a typical small Teas town and the speed limit dropped to 45 MPH. I slowed and we continued on our way, enjoying our time and conversation with one another. I saw the police officer on the right facing our direction and a feeling of gratitude washed over me. I am not the man that I used to be. The sight of an officer paroling doesn't cause panic, because I don't have the heavy foot I once did and I never have the illegal contraband on me or in the vehicle I once had when under the grips of addiction. Also, the only influence I drive under these days is that of the Holy Spirit. So I don't worry when I see a cop, and it's something that I feel grateful for.

But as I passed the officer, he pulled out onto the road behind me. There was a time when this would have freaked me out quite badly, but now it was a momentary what on earth? and then relaxing because I knew I was clean, legal and obeying the law. I even had my seat belt on. We stopped at a red light, and I simply kept talking with Leah, not thinking about the officer behind me. But when the light turned green and we both began to move forward again, His lights began to flash. He had targeted me after all. I pulled into a nearby parking lot, retrieving my wallet and license in the process and stopped with my hands in clear view, the car in park and the window rolled down. A few seconds later Leah and I learned that we had both failed to notice that we were driving through a school zone. I thought I was good, within the law and with no need to worry about being pulled over. But instead of driving two miles an hour under the speed limit, I had been eight miles and hour over and in a school zone.

Ok, I'll have to do something to make it right, either pay the ticket or take defensive driving. I'll have to trust God to take care of us as we just effectively spent money we really didn't have to spend. Either way I handle things, that failure to notice the situation correctly cost us close to $200. But I knew that it was OK. I stayed calm. There was never any fear, and I didn't get angry. I could still see the hand of God on my life making things right. The officer was very professional and handled the situation well. He thanked me for my courtesy and cooperation and I told him to stay safe out there as he walked back to his patrol car. I had made a mistake and been in the wrong. It wasn't major and things would be OK. That's positive.

But what if I had insisted that everything was good, that I had no reason to be pulled over to the point where I refuse to stop because I just knew his lights were not meant for me? Suddenly a minor incident would turn into a major one. That would not have been good no matter what spin my positive thinking put on it. Now that may seem a bit extreme, but while we may never do such a thing as go that far with an officer flashing his lights, we do it all too often with God.

It's good to focus on His love, grace and that we are forgiven. It's good to remember that He loves us as we are and not as we should be. When we mess up, we should have confidence that we are forgiven, He still loves and has not and will not reject us or turn His back on us for our mistake. We need to have full confidence that we can quickly turn back to Him and that like the Prodigal Father He will welcome us home, clean us up and rejoice over our return to relationship. But we need to understand we messed up, that we got off track.

We have to accept our mistake, to see where we got it wrong and accept that we were outside His will, even if we hadn't originally seen the spiritual zoning change. If we positive think our way out of the reality of that, it doesn't keep us from feeling condemnation. It prevents us from seeing truth and make the changes that need to be made. We will not be more careful in the future to watch for the warning signs of the zone changes in unfamiliar places. We will trust our own righteousness and not lean on His. Positive is good, but it's not good to say I'm OK and you're OK when we're not. Condemnation is removed and prevented by grace not by denial or refusing to see reality.

Today let us be positive about His love and grace but not delusional about it. Let us be quick to acknowledge His authority and trust His view of things over our judgement of things and let Him pull us over and correct us and return us to right quickly before we get too far off track.

Unshackled Echo ~ February 5, 2019 ~ Listening To Wisdom

Yesterday's Unshackled Moment theme was illustrated by the slow process of my overloaded computer that was in desperate need of being backed up and then to have files deleted to free up memory. I bought the backup and freed up over half the memory on the computer yesterday, and am happy to say that the computer is running much more efficiently now. I also dropped off the damaged backup at the computer repair shop that I use both personally and for the ministry computers. I got a call this morning from them.

The good news is that eventually I will be able to get the documents and photographs that are important to Leah and I from that backup. The bad news is that it will be a long time as we put back a few dollars here and there and cash in our change over what will probably be a few years. There's nothing that we need enough right now to put ourselves in the financial bind that the $750 to over a $1000 recovery cost would put us in. It's important enough to get the data recovered to save and wait, but not worth not eating over. The sad thing is that my father suggested some time back that we do what he and my mom do and get cloud storage in addition to the physical backup. Had I listened, we would simply be able to pull the files from the cloud and have them again today.

Sometimes life happens. Things go wrong. It's not good to live in worry and fear, and you can't prepare for everything. But God puts people in our lives that can offer wisdom and advice about the way we live and handle our lives. This can be as simple a thing as what should be common sense that having all your files on one backup device is insufficient because the backup isn't backed up and if something happens you could lose everything. Or it could be advice like what I listened to that said, yes it's good to work hard to take care of your responsibilities and not use excuses to bail out of difficult times, but that if I continued to do the physically damaging labor that I had been doing the past year I could end up crippled and unable to work at all.

Sometimes the advice has a cost of swallowing pride and accepting help or that someone might see what I need to do better than I, sometimes the cost may be paying something now that in the long run is cheaper than the cost could be (like having insurance), sometimes it may mean letting go of some things I want in order to protect myself and my family from things I want less. But no matter the cost, the wisdom of those God puts in our lives to help us, and the wisdom found in His Word can make recovery possible or easier when the rains come and the wind blows. Jesus is the cornerstone of our foundation that holds our life together and wisdom is one of the blocks that build on Him.

Let us be more willing to listen to the wisdom of others, to adjust our lives into the stronger and safer structure that wisdom can provide.

Unshackled Echo ~ February 4, 2019 ~ Crashing Processors

I guess that last night's sermon was the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back, only in this case the camel is my computer's processor. The external backup that Leah and I use recently decided to quit on us. I need to take it to a computer repair shop and ask if they can recover the data that we can no longer get to. I pray that they can. I also need to purchase a new backup. Since I have not gotten around to doing that yet, each new piece of data stored on this computer has increased its burden and cut into its memory reserves. I've been in the red of remaining memory for about a week now, and it appears that saving last night's sermon just crossed the line between what can and what can not be handled.

I'm not out of memory yet.  In fact, I have 40.8 GB free, which is more than several computers had totally new as recently as 15 years ago. But with almost 460 GB of storage space used, this computer has had about all it can take. It took me over 40 minutes this morning to open this page so that I can write today's Unshackled Moment and prepare last night's sermon for posting. The audio has been turned into a video file and is being saved as I type this. Which, of course will take up even more of the memory that is free and the computer will slow its crawl. It might even begin crashing. It's gotten bad enough now that I must do something. I can not put it off any longer.

We need to be careful not to do with our lives what I have done with this computer. I know that I need to remove the weight and burden and worries from my life on a regular daily basis. I need to get them out of my memory and give them to the Lord. He can store those that need to be stored and take care of them, and He has the wisdom to know what can and needs to simply be deleted. I don't need to hang onto them, because even before I reach the absolute limits of what I can take, it effects me. I begin to be less able to serve and complete the things I need to do as my processes slow and freeze, and I struggle under the burden I am not designed to handle. If I hold on to too much for too long, I will actually break down and become a tool that can not be used.

It is my prayer to be of maximum service to God and to others. This is part of the way of life that makes my life worth living, brings joy and contentment and keeps me free from the bondage of addiction. There are parts of that prayer that can only be answered by God. It is His power that changes and transforms me. I can't change myself in any lasting or real way. But it is my job to surrender and daily respond to His call. One part of His call is to cast our cares on Him. When I refuse to surrender my cares to God, I am holding back a portion of my will and life. That is a dangerous path, but it's also a path that becomes harder and harder to travel as the load gets heavier and heavier.

Let us be quick to dump our cares and anxieties and not eat up precious processor speed and memory with things that God has asked us to give to Him. When we let it go, we can be more effective, and life is better. God is faithful and able to handle whatever we put in His hands.

Unshackled Echo ~ February 2, 2019 ~ Champions

It's less than a week* to Superbowl Sunday. This is the game that the 106 men on the rosters of the Denver Broncos and the Carolina Panthers have been trying to win since they began off season work outs  last summer. Every game up to this point has been a part of the process to reach this point and to win this game, to be declared world champions and gain the glory. But the truth of the matter is that half of those 106 men are going to fall short. One team must lose.

So in attempt to be the winners rather than the losers, both teams have been preparing since the Division Championship games. Sure, there's been time to rest and be with families and other things, but in the back of the mind during rest and recreation and in the front of the minds the rest of the time they have been preparing for next Sunday. They practice their plays. They study their opponent. They condition their minds and bodies. And they listen to their coaches.

They are not in this alone. None of them are. They have each other, and they must help one another, encourage each other and work together. And no matter how good they are or how experienced they are, they need coaches who can give tips, instruction, offer a fresh perspective, an objective viewpoint of their strengths and weaknesses. And so do we.

We are part of the body of Christ. We are not isolated pilgrim's. We need to prepare for the next battle as soon as the current one comes to an end. Win or lose, we must look forward to the next time our former master comes at us with those all too familiar chains. How are we going to escape, overcome temptation and defeat the enemy's plans for us? By being prepared mentally, emotionally, physically, and especially spiritually. By keeping close and being guided by and taught by our Head Coach, the Holy Spirit. By listening to assistant coaches, those who know the game, walk the walk and will give us honest objective views with our victory being their motivation. We need to remember that we are not alone. We have others to lean on, and we need to be there for others as well. We can be victorious, whatever we face, and we can continue to live free as champions.

Unshackled Echo ~ February 1, 2019 ~ Update Virus Protection

My computer went through its paces slowly, freezing ever few seconds like a child trying to cross a yard while playing red light, green light. Finally it stopped trying at sat there loading one page on my web browser for what seemed like hours, but what was more likely about 45 seconds. I pushed the button and forced a reboot. As soon as everything came back up, which took so long that I knew I had turned my patience mode off without realizing it and said a quick prayer, I ran an anti-virus scan.
It finished and informed me that it found 4 files infected with malware but had done nothing about it.

What? It hadn't quarantined the bad files. Nothing had been cleaned or deleted or isolated. It didn't even bother to tell me what the files were. That's not how it's supposed to work. I have an awesome anti-virus program. I glanced up at the top of the box and read the words Not Protected. In small print below I saw that there was an update available. I clicked the button and began the download. After the installation  process finished, I ran the scan again. This time everything worked as it should.

I do have a good anti-virus program, but if it doesn't learn more, update to keep up with the new attacks, it can not protect my computer. Yesterday's understanding and knowledge isn't always enough. The same is true with our spiritual condition. We have a daily relationship with Christ, a 24 hour reprieve from the bondage and chains of our old nature and our addictions. That reprieve is contingent upon the maintenance of our spiritual condition.

As we begin our journey, sometimes a shallow understanding of spiritual things and who God is provides sufficient protection from the enemies and temptations of our souls. That is one amazing thing about grace. When we trust God with faith, even a small bit of understanding can move the mountains in our lives, do what we can not do ourselves, and provide refuge and peace that can not be shaken. But relationships must grow or deteriorate, even our relationship with God. His desire is for us to know Him more deeply, to close the gap between us, and for our understanding to mature.

In order to keep our spiritual condition effective and up to date, we can't rely on what we learned last year or even last month. We can't stand firm on the understanding of yesterday. We must continue to be teachable and allow for further and deeper revelation and understanding of who He is and His truths. The Word of God is alive, and as we take it in, we can receive more each time. We can gain deeper understanding, other meanings, and yes, even areas where we were wrong. We don't get all revelation right away. We couldn't handle it if we did. But learning is growing. If we don't grow, we don't learn. The enemy does learn though, and sees our weaknesses. He will adjust his attempts to bring us back into captivity based on the areas where we have holes in our shields. If we don't update our spiritual condition to close the gaps between us and God, we leave ourselves vulnerable to new and different traps. Sooner or latter we will crumble and fall.

To stay free we must constantly stay up to date with our protection by ever moving closer to the One who protects us. Let us not relay on yesterday's protection and understanding for today's dangers and trials. Let us renew and refresh our relationship and allow the Spirit to give us whatever information and make whatever changes in us that need to be made so that we can function as we should and remain strong, faithful and secure as we go through our day.
