Unshackled Moments ~ March 13, 2018 ~ God's Not Fussing At You

When the disciples reached the other side, they had forgotten to bring any bread. Jesus said to them, “Watch and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” And they began discussing it among themselves, saying, “We brought no bread.” But Jesus, aware of this, said, “O you of little faith, why are you discussing among yourselves the fact that you have no bread? Do you not yet perceive? Do you not remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? How is it that you fail to understand that I did not speak about bread? Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” Then they understood that he did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
- Matthew 16:5-12

I have heard and read this passage countless times, always thinking of it in terms of Jesus' warning to the disciples. Beware the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees. What is that leaven, and where is it most likely to get us if we aren't watchful? That sort of thing. To me this passage has always been a Christian version of Beware the Ides of March. Don't get too comfortable or complacent, because something you think you can trust is about to stab you over and over.

But as I read through several chapters in Matthew yesterday, something else about this event struck me for the first time. I love it when the Holy Spirit does that. Read the same passage 50 times and God can still say, here's something you never thought about. Awesome! Anyway, of course I knew in my head and had realized the proximity issue before, but not the implications of it for the disciples, for people in general, for me in particular (and you, Dear Reader, if you are anything like me).

Proximity issue? The above passage of scripture begins five verses after the feeding of the 4000. I know the 4000 doesn't get as much press as the feeding of the 5000, but hey, it's still epic. I don't know how much actual time had passed, but here are the bullet notes: Jesus miraculously feeds 4000 beside the Sea of Galilee, He sends the crowds away and takes the boat to Magadan (Matthew 15:39), the Pharisees and Sadducees meet Him and ask for a sign....Pause. Once again, I don't know how much time had passed, but perhaps word had reached the religious folks of the miracle feast and they wanted their own taste. Or maybe they were just responding to the news of all the miracles Jesus did. But basically, Jesus answers them, and leaves. They get to the other side, and then we have the starting passage. I point all that out to say this is not like three years later. It's likely very shortly thereafter. Even if it some time had passed, you would think the disciples would remember what Jesus can do with very little, right?

Jesus expects them to. Beware the leaven....it's because we forgot the bread they say to one another. Jesus is all, Seriously? Don't you guys remember the 9000 people I've fed with a few fish and twelve loaves of bread? Do you really think I'm worried about what we're going to eat? And pretty much everyone agrees they should have known Jesus spoke of something other than bread and how much of it they did or didn't have. So why didn't they?

Finally I get to the aha moment I had. Jesus performs a miracle involving bread. Shortly afterward, the religious leaders show up to try to make Him do things their way. He decides to warn His disciples out of love and concern for them to watch out, both for the religious teaching that is not of God and for the self-righteous, God serves me not the other way around, prideful attitude of these guys. So He uses bread as an illustration. Beware their leaven, since a little leaven goes through all the dough. And what do the disciples hear, these men who had been walking, talking, eating and enjoying fellowship with Jesus for at least two years at this point?

Shame on you. You forgot the bread.

That's where their thinking goes! They think Jesus is getting onto them for not bringing supplies. Never mind what they think they did wrong though. Here's the point. Jesus loves them. He's not upset with them. He's warning them about something dangerous, and they look back over recent events, pull up a mistake or oversight and think, He's upset with us, He's rebuking us for failing to do something, I knew we blew it.....

Jesus has to tell them stop it. Get your minds off yourselves, boys. Haven't you figured out by now that I can overcome your shortcomings, mistakes and oversights and that I can provide for your needs? Don't you remember? Now they are getting a little rebuked.

I can't help but wonder how often we, no, I am guilty of this. God is trying to warn me of something or simply expressing His concern for me, and I pick up my cloak of shame and decide He's fussing at me. He's looking ahead at what I will have to face, and I'm stuck in the past trying to figure out the solution to a problem that He's either already dealt with or is more than able to handle.

I think the Spirit would often say to us, Hey, I'm not fussing at you. That weight of condemnation and shame you feel is not from God. Jesus already dealt with that issue and your shame of it. I'm trying to love you and help you. Stay with me in the now. Listen to what I am actually saying. Jesus is your advocate, not your accuser. Daddy is not looking for a reason to punish you but wants to draw you close to Him and protect you.

Unshackled Moments ~ March 12, 2018 ~ Sin Or Disease?

I received a message with a question about the sin vs disease definition of addiction... controversy, for lack of a better word. An organization I will not name here claims that they will not enter the debate on the issue, because however addiction is defined, Jesus is the answer! But, in their statement of beliefs, the same group states:
we believe the Bible says alcohol and drug addiction are sin, not disease. Therefore, the facts of sin and separation from God are dealt with as the roots of all addiction problems.

The question posed to me was, as an addiction minister how would you address it?

This is an easy thing to answer. In a way it is a non-issue, or an issue of semantics that distracts from the real issues. This is a difficult thing to answer. It is a sensitive subject, perhaps even a trigger of pain and hurt in many that can cause them not to be able to hear and receive what you are saying if you say it in a way that shuts them down. This may seem contradictory, but it isn't. The answer is that they are right...and they are wrong....and it doesn't matter. I would pray that you, Dear Reader, would try to give me until the end of this to react or respond further. I say respond further, because I doubt many read the opening without thinking that they think it is sin, or that it is disease or something. We tend to react quickly and decisively to statements such as these. Basically, I am asking that you hear me out before turning me off or clicking the button to move on or close this down.

The truth is, that with the exception of one word, I agree with the statement of belief above, with qualifiers. The first qualifier is that we define terms. This is important, because the truth is that I can't say that I agree with this group, because I do not know that I know how they are defining the word sin. I do know that I completely disagree with a lot of what they support, endorse and proclaim, which is why I will not name them. But I don't know for sure how they define sin, and it's important. We can not assume.

If I say I love you, you may think you know what I mean. I may think you'll understand me. We all think we know what love is, and we are most likely English speakers and readers. But it is not always so clear cut. If I say that I love you, and I mean that I care for your needs and condition, that I am concerned about you, that I am committed to helping you and desire the best for you, even at the expense of my own comfort and security because you are a fellow human being who is loved, treasured, and valued of God, that you are important and valuable to me, but what you hear is I think you're really amazing and attractive and I want a romantic relationship with you, then we have a major problem. There is only one person I love in a romantic way, and that is my  awesome, amazing and beautiful wife. At the same time, if you think my statement makes you no more valuable to me than a sports team because you have heard me say I love the Dallas Stars, then we also have a problem, because people are more important than sports, or pizza or that TV show I love. You get my point. There are different ways to define love, and it's important when the word is used that both giver and receiver are on the same page. The same is true of the word sin.

The word sin has been used to beat people up and condemn them by the religious for so long that many, even Christians, recoil and flinch and close off when the word is used.

Sin may be as complicated to define as love, and just as dangerous because we all think we know what it means when we hear it, and yet it could mean something different to the person using the word.  I will state my simplified definition of sin so that you know where I am coming from when I use it. Sin is that, anything and everything, which separates us from our Creator.

Now that is very basic. We could delve into the nuances for days on end and never completely exhaust the issue, but it will suffice. Baker's Evangelical Dictionary of Biblical Theology states the following:
The vast terminology, within its biblical contexts, suggests that sin has three aspects: disobedience to or breach of law, violation of relationships with people, and rebellion against God, which is the most basic concept.
This is one sentence from a very long exposition on sin in Baker's. If you desire to go deeper, you can read the entry in its entirety here. But let us look at this as it stands for a moment. First, my simple definition. That which separates us from God. Are we separated by God when in the chains of our addiction. Recovery literature would say, yes.

Lack of power, that was our dilemma. We had to find a power by which we could live, and it had to be a Power greater than ourselves. Obviously. But where and how were we to find this Power?
Well, that's exactly what this book is about. Its main object is to enable you to find a Power greater than yourself which will solve your problem. That means we have written a book which we believe to be spiritual as well as moral. And it means, of course, that we are going to talk about God. Here difficulty arises with agnostics. Many times we talk to a new man and watch his hope rise as we discuss his alcoholic problems and explain our fellowship. But his face falls when we speak of spiritual matters, especially when we mention God, for we have re-opened a subject which our man thought he had neatly evaded or entirely ignored.
- Alcoholics Anonymous p. 45

We may be more comfortable with the idea or terms like character defects over the word sin, but the point of the book and the program of recovery is to connect us to our Creator, a power greater than ourselves. The reason we need to find and connect with Daddy is because we have been separated from Him. Even if we are in bondage as believers, we still have not submitted control of our will and lives to Him in the area of bondage, which causes distance and separation in the day to day, even if not in eternity. We must increase our conscious contact with the Spirit of God within us and surrender to Him in order to find and maintain freedom in the area of addiction.

If we continue in our addiction, we are outside the will of God, because He loves us and cares for us, and it is not His will for us to destroy ourselves or others. He desires the best for us, which we can never have while in captivity. We can not be outside His will and close to Him at the same moment, so at that moment, there is separation and therefore, by that definition, sin.

But what about Baker's? Well, let's look at it open minded and honestly.

1. Disobedience to or breach of law.  What is the law of God? Jesus said all the law is summed up in love God and love others. We know that when addiction rules our life and is active, we are selfish and self-centered. We are not living in love, either for God or others or even ourselves. We are not treating ourselves and others as though they have value, but we use others and try to ignore God. This is not love. It is a violation of the law of love.

2. Violation of relationships with people. Well, I think that's covered above. We are users, manipulators and damagers of others. I have never met anyone in recovery walking free of former addiction who claims that they didn't hurt anyone or violate anyone but themselves, although many of us felt that way when starting the journey to freedom because of the self deception that goes hand in hand with addiction.

3. Rebellion against God. You don't reign in my life, at least not in this area, God, I do. I'm going to run my own life. I am going to do what I want to do. These are all rebellion against the rightful place of the Lord of all Creation. The Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous puts it this way, we must surrender our will and our lives to His care, and we must quit playing God. We must cease our rebellion against His will and control of us. In recovery jargon. there is a God, I am not Him, and neither are you. Take off your God suit. It doesn't fit.

I think I have shown how addiction is sin without being condemning. I  want to state very clearly that God loves you as you are, not as you should be. He doesn't require you to stop sinning to come into relationship with Him. In fact, it is impossible to do so, because without Him, we are slaves to sin, we are powerless to control our self, as well as the symptom manifesting as addiction. It doesn't mean you're evil or worthless. It means you need Daddy. It doesn't mean you need to clean up your act, because  you can't, but it means you need the work of Jesus to make you new and clean. It doesn't mean you need to try harder and be more moral. It means you need the Spirit to empower you and transform you.

But that doesn't close the issue. The word I don't agree with in the statement of belief that started all of this is not. Disease is defined as a disorder of structure or function in a living organism that adversely affects the host, and has symptoms and signs that indicate the presence of the disease. With that definition, there can be no doubt that addiction is a disease It is outside the designed order of being. It is not how we were created, so it both effects our structure, our health - mind, body and spirit, as well as our function. There is a definite adverse effect, and there are symptoms and signs that show it to be there. For that matter, with that definition, it is clear that all sin is a sign of spiritual disease.

But really, it doesn't matter. It is semantics that distract. I don't care how you define what is wrong with me. Just tell me how to cure it, how  to  make it better. Here the opening is right. However it is defined, Jesus is the answer. Let's focus on solution rather than quibble over classification. I don't need a diagnosis. I need a cure.

My wife has an auto-immune disease. We honestly don't know  what it is. Some doctors have said Lupus. Others have said MS. Still others have said they don't know other than that there is clearly an auto-immune issue. I don't care. It doesn't matter what label to put on it. The only question that matters to me is can you help her? All she cares about is getting well, or at least better. The treatment for Lupus and MS are so similar and also so individual that it's a moot point. Whichever one is the diagnosis, doctors start basically at the same place and then tweak treatment to work for the individual. The label really  only matters to the insurance companies. which, by the way, is true about addiction as well. No one said, let's not do anything until we can figure out exactly what box in which to put your problem. No, they all said we'll worry about it later, for  now let's start treatment. And she is dong better.

Does it matter if addiction is a disease or not, or exactly what kind of disease, if we have a treatment and it works? What disease do you have? I don't know what it was, but I have recovered! Does it matter if it is sin if we have been brought into relationship with Daddy and been given  the power to live free of it? No. What matters is treatment.

Call it what you will. Spiritual sickness, a disease, a result of character defects, a symptom of sin or just plain sin. We can argue over semantics while people see the fight and steer clear, only to die in their sin or their disease. The point is they died while we had the solution they couldn't find because we were more concerned with what to call it than giving them the solution. And I truly believe that all of Heaven weeps and Daddy's heart breaks every time it happens.

Are you in bondage to addiction of any kind or struggling with a habitual sin or habitual character defect or just have an area in your life that produces pain and damage rather than life, love, peace and joy? I don't care which of those, or what combination of those, you are dealing with. I don't care what you call them or how you define them. I know the solution. I have the cure. And it's free.

Daddy loves you as you are, not as you should be. No matter who you are, where you come from, what you have done, are doing or will do. Regardless of what has been done, is being done or will be done to you. Daddy loves you. You matter to Him. Jesus has already carried your hurt, shame and guilt. He has paid the price to make you clean and set you free. The Spirit is calling come, and I will make my home in you, have fellowship and relationship with you, make you new and give you power to do what you could never do before...be whole, have a life worth living and love, truly and unselfishly. You don't have to change your life. You don't have to fix anything or clean up your act. You don't have to earn it or deserve it. In fact you can't. But you can have it. All you have to do is accept the work that Jesus has done on your behalf and give the Spirit control to lead, guide and direct you, and let Daddy sit on the throne where He belongs instead of trying to run your own life, rule your own roost, live according to your own will. The solution is that simple. It worked for me. Just call me a forgiven and cured spiritually diseased sinner, who is not yet totally made whole and still shows symptoms of sin, but is getting better every day and has put together a decent string or days where the symptoms of addiction have not shown, by the power of the Spirit who made me free and is doing the restoration work on the project of my life.

Jesus Is The Answer

Wally Flynt shares on the desperation of the world and the different things offered as solutions compared to the true solution. The message, "Jesus Is The Answer," is about 3 minutes long and was recorded at Nacogdoches Christian Fellowship on Sunday, March 11, 2018. It's our prayer that you are blessed and ministered to as you listen. May God bless and keep you.

Unshackled Echo ~ March 10, 2018 ~ Heavy Lifting

Today's Unshackled Echo was previously published on
February 22, 2015.

Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.
- Matthew 11:29-30

I remember reading and hearing this verse and thinking my burden sure doesn’t feel light, and the task doesn’t seem all that easy either. Doing God’s will, loving and serving like Jesus is so opposite of who and what I am that it not only feels heavy and hard, it feels impossible. It feels impossible, because it is impossible. I’m just not good enough, caring enough or strong enough, and I never will be this side of eternity.

But that’s me trying to pull God’s plow. I’m not built for it. My father and I have moved quite a few pieces of heavy equipment and furniture that two people who aren’t built like the Hulk shouldn’t move on their own. We’ve both done that sort of thing solo as well. But the truth is we didn’t.

Dad taught me early on how to use the laws of God to make the load work for us rather than against us. Understanding certain truths like balance point and leverage can make a weight impossible for one man to lift manageable. I can recall more than once when a load on my shoulder shifted causing me to lose that precarious balance point and suddenly what had felt like a heavy load became a crushing weight that I had to get out from under fast before it hurt me.

Relationship with Jesus is our Spiritual balance. He is all the leverage we need to move the mountain and lift the impossible crushing weight. When it starts feeling like too much, don’t throw your effort into it. Position yourself closer to the balance. The more balanced the load, the lighter it feels. When we rely on the truths of God’s love and word, He works for us. As long as we remain positioned, we can accomplish whatever He would have us accomplish. It is only when we try to work against the truth and manhandle the load that it hurts us and reminds of just how small and weak we truly are on our own.

Abba, help me to remember that it is in my position with You that my burden becomes Your burden and the task becomes doable. Help me to surrender to Your truth today so that I don’t try to manhandle or muscle my life and what you would have me do. Amen.

Unshackled Moments ~ March 9, 2018 ~ Learning From My Mistake

I feel a little foolish. I made a mistake. Not a big one, just something that is going to make me have to start over on a project. For the record, making mistakes is not a character defect nor is it sinning. There is a difference between a mistake and a sin. But that's not what I am writing of today. I'll probably get into that when I get into the upcoming message series going through 1 John after Easter. But not now.

I wanted to thank everyone for their prayers. I am very grateful to all who prayed about the need when both the computer and the backup went down permanently in less than a month. No more patching and praying. Unshackled Life Ministries now has a new computer equipment and an improved ability to record our audio and the audio for Nacogdoches Christian Fellowship. I won't take the time to write it all out at the moment, but Daddy left His fingerprints all over everything, and I want to thank you all who new about the need and gave us prayer support. I ask that you continue to keep this ministry, my wife, and me in your prayers, but asking for and being thankful for prayers is not what this is about either.

Get to the point already then. What is this about? Well, it's about the new computer, interface and setup we have and that mistake I made. But you said that isn't what it's about. It's not about mistakes being OK or mistakes not being sin, and I could not bring up the new computer setup without expressing my gratitude for the prayers, but it's not about that either. It is about the mistake itself, to be specific it's about power. The Holy Spirit has been using a lot of object lessons lately to remind me of some truths about power and powerlessness.

With the new set up, we now have one of the top 10 computers for audio production. We don't have a top 10 audio producer, but I do have a radio/tv minor and some experience running professional sound systems. So I can manage, and with the new set up I can do some things I was never able to do with the old equipment. Recording music is one of those things, and recording audio from the Internet, such as a speaker on YouTube, and having the same quality as the original to turn into an audio file for later listening is another.

To make sure that I can best utilize the equipment Daddy provided to best serve God and others, I have been exploring and experimenting with it, to learn how to get the most out of it and what it will do.

Did that sound good? Did I sound all spiritual and like a preacher? Want to know the truth? I'm a geek, and I love this stuff. I am grateful that I didn't have to record this week's sermon with a phone and try to make it work, but I am not all work, no play, this must only be used to further the work of God every second.... I've been playing. I've been recording audio books off of YouTube and turning them to audio files I can listen to on my phone without having to keep my screen on. With YouTube I have to keep the app open in order to listen, and that makes keeping something going while the phone is in my pocket and I'm outside feeding the animals difficult. The app I have to listen to audio books with will run in the background. So, now I can find what I want on YouTube, make a copy and listen to it later. Last night I tried to do this with the latest choice. Setting to record overnight is plenty of time to record 8 hours. By the time I get dressed in the morning and grab my coffee, the file is done or almost done.

Except last night. Last night the computer went to sleep about two hours into the recording, and I will have to start over. When I set everything back up in my study after carrying it all to the church to record last night's message, I evidently forgot to plug it back in. This new computer is awesome, but it's not going to run and power an interface for 8 hours on battery. It doesn't have the power. But it's a lot better than the old backup that just died. It couldn't run on battery for more than five minutes, and it didn't go to sleep; it shut down.

We have a battery too, and like a laptop or phone battery, it is not self sustaining. It needs to be recharged regularly. Now with my laptop, I keep it plugged in almost all the time, excluding transport. If the computer is up and running, it's plugged in to an outlet if at all possible. And that is, or should be, us also. Left to my own devices, without being plugged into and running on the power of the Spirit, I go to sleep. Or shut down. I can not serve God or serve others well or with right motives. I can't love God or love others like Jesus did. I can not deny self and follow Jesus when I am running on battery....at least not long.

Battery times vary from individual to individual. For that matter, they vary with one individual, depending on how healthy they are, how well charged they are, and how much power they are using. That makes sense, right? We sometimes get this idea that Steps 1-3 have driven into us that we can't run on our own power lest we fall or die, so if we aren't plugged into a power greater than ourselves, if we aren't running connected to the Spirit every minute of every day, we're doomed. It goes along with that whole instruction to pray without ceasing. You're not going to be able to do it. If I am wrong about that, please let me know and include detailed, step-by-step how to do what you have done guides. The truth is that while we aim for and strive for perfection and holiness, we will not attain it on this side of eternity, and we are not going to ever be able to 100% pray without ceasing for any serious length of time, nor are we going to get to the point where we never, ever, run on battery.

And that's OK. We don't need to be quaking in our boots and living in fear that if our plug comes loose we're going to shut down in five minutes or less. This is where Step 11 is so important. We seek through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with Daddy, asking to know His will and for the power to carry it out. That's plugging in. That's making sure that we're not trying to live Step3 on our power. But running on battery isn't running on our power. The battery doesn't have or generate any of it's own juice. It stores power from the power source to use later. That's why the designers put it in there, because sometimes we unplug and it's good not to instantly shut down when that happens. God made us able to store up His love, goodness, power and more as we spend time plugged into Him. That way, when we are unplugged, we can still function and still serve, for a while. We need to plug back in before the battery dies, but the more time we spend plugged in, the better, bigger, more efficient our battery. That's not an excuse to run longer and longer between charges, which will weaken the battery. It's reminding us that we're charged up. We're not running on our power, but His, even when it's battery and we're not consciously plugged in. We don't have to walk through life in fear that if we take our consciousness and awareness off God for more than a minute we'll fail Him, fail the test, stumble. Thy word have I hid in my heart that I might not sin against Thee, the psalmist said. Charge up by spending time with Daddy and getting to know Daddy, by trusting in the work of Big Brother Jesus, and submitting to the guidance, teaching and charging of the Holy Spirit. Then walk confidently and be strong in the power of His might, even when it's battery power.

Oh of course, if you know He has work to do through you that is going to take more time and energy than your battery has, make sure you're plugged in before you start . Not because of fear, but just so you won't go to sleep a quarter of the way through and have to charge and start over.

Lord, we thank You that You designed us to be able to connect with You and be powered by You, and that You gave us spiritual batteries so that we can run on Your power, even when we're not totally plugged in to the awareness of Your presence. Help us to remember to stay charged, but also remind us that if we get out there in life too long and get low, we don't have to find an outlet, that You, Holy Spirit can and will meet us wherever we are, and we can have instant access to You because You have made Your very home within us. Thank You for Your power and Your help and Your love for us. Help us to walk in it and share it and do Your will, by Your power, for Your glory always. Amen

The Illusion Of Free Will

Dalyn Woodard continues the look at the ministry and anointing of Jesus with the third part of Luke 4:17-21. Were we born with free will or were we born into captivity? What did Jesus do to ensure us the liberty to choose? The message, "The Illusion Of Free Will," continues this year's Lenten series, is about 32 minutes long, and was recorded at Nacogdoches Christian Fellowship on Wednesday, March 7, 2018. It's our prayer that you are blessed and ministered to as you listen.

The Ash Wednesday message, "It's All About The Heart," can be found here. The first message from this passage in Luke, "Good News For The Poor," can be found here, and the second message, "Healing The Broken Heart," can be found here.

Unshackled Moments ~ March 7, 2018 ~ Lessons From My Cat

How do people get all those funny YouTube videos of cats, who are rumored to be so graceful, jumping and failing miserably? I wonder if they simply follow their cats around the house all day recording? I just had one of those moments, and it gave me a good laugh.

Our cat came into the bathroom and stared up at the slim window. The sun shone through, and I am sure it looked inviting. For one thing, I know that she likes to lounge in windows, despite the fact, or perhaps partly because, it drives my hound dog nuts. For another thing, it's pretty chilly in the house this morning, and I am sure the idea of basking in the warmth of the sun seemed appealing. I saw her flex her muscles, and I knew what was coming, although I did not have time to grab my phone and get the camera going.

Sure enough, she jumped, hit the glass and bounced back onto the floor. At which point she quickly pulled a classic cat move, turning her back on the window, licking her paw, and acting nonchalant, as if to say, I meant to do that, or better yet, you didn't see that. I kept laughing, and received the look. Folks with cats know which look I mean. That superior/evil who do you think you're laughing at, I will kill you in your sleep look.

I would have thought that as dirty as the window is she would have seen the glass. I'm a bit behind on the housework. But no, somehow she missed it. And it made me think how often I have done the same thing. Something looks appealing for one reason or another, and I go for it, only to hit an obstacle that has me bouncing back to the starting point embarrassed. No, seriously I meant to do that. Let's just pretend that never happened. Maybe I should have seen the obstacle. Maybe there was no way to know.

While I am trying to be more like Daddy, I am so very grateful that He is not like me. He doesn't stand by or reach for His camera when He observes me getting ready to do something stupid. He doesn't laugh when I bounce off the glass, nor does he laugh harder when He sees me upset. He is much more loving than I. There is always a warning. Don't do it. Don't jump. The window isn't open. Of course, I don't always listen. I can be like a cat in more ways than one, I guess. Sometimes I think I know better. But when I try anyway, He doesn't laugh, nor does He belittle or berate me.

Sometimes, depending on His will and the situation, He will open the window for me, making it clear that if I had sought His help to start with I wouldn't have bounced off the glass. I did that this morning. After I stopped laughing. I opened the window, picked up the cat and set her in the sill. She immediately jumped down and ran from the room. If she couldn't do it herself, I guess she just didn't want it. So instead of warming in the sun, she is curled up next to a heater that isn't on.

I do that sometimes too. Daddy picks me up, and takes me to the place I need to be for warmth, or peace, or joy or whatever, and I dismiss it, jump down, and go somewhere else. Perhaps it's not as comfortable as I'd like, or thought it would be. Maybe it isn't warming me quickly enough to satisfy my craving for instant gratification. Could it be that I am just in the mood to do it my way on my terms? Nah. For whatever reason, at times I still turn to other things than what Daddy provides to satisfy and sustain. And they work about as well as that heater is warming the cat right now.

Oh Lord, help me not to be like that stupid cat, arrogant and independent. Help me to see and remember that You care for me, and that Your way is better than mine. Help me to accept Your provision and care instead of seeking to do it my way. And help me to see when the window is closed and wait for You to open it or guide me in another way before I leap. Amen.
