I think the phrasing of that question basically asked it. It's the haunting that messes with our lives. Having dreams is not a a bad thing. God created us to have them, and in some cases, He is even the One who gave us that dream. But we can't let any dream simply bounce around our brain distracting us from our service for today, nor can we pretend that daydreaming and imagining the dream somehow magically coming true takes the place of working toward its fulfillment. If we trust God with our dreams as much as we trust Him with the rest of our lives, He can make our dreams worth living as well. He can take them further and make them even greater than we dreamed on our own.
Yes, some dreams were seeds, starting points that need to change before they can grow to fruition. Some were foolish distractions from the calling of God that would actually be more satisfying for us than the dream coming true ever could be. Some are given by God and need to stay as are and be fulfilled, even thought they seem no less possible than any other kind of dream. Just ask Joseph.
But we have to do something. We need to trust God with our dreams. Pray about them and for guidance for if, when and how we need to begin working toward making them come true or if we need to be asking the Holy Spirit to guide, direct and change our dream to something better, His dream for us. When the time comes to work, we can't just daydream. Every dream needs a magic ingredient called effort to come to life. But the most important aspect of making dreams come true it to trust and obey the Dream Giver, the Dream Master, the Miraculous Reality Changer.
We once dreamed of being free, and God made that dream come true. So many other blessings were little more than one day wouldn't it be cool if this and that can happen? But each of those things is just a starting point for the big dream, that special, personal seed in the mind that will take us to that place that only God can make where we are most satisfied and joyful and most of service to Him who set us free. Thinking of our dreams is nice, but it will never change anything about our lives. Changing our dreams to match His and chasing the dreams that God has for us with our prayers and actions though will change more than just our life. It will change the world around us.
