The reason this is one of my favorite stories about David is because of how he handles the post-battle conflict. You see, 200 of his men were too weary to make the journey after the women and children. Some of the 400 who did fight wanted to cut them out when it came time to divide up the spoils. These 200 were to be given their wives and children but no spoils of war. David's response to this was decisive and Godly. No. We're not being selfish with what God has given us. The men who stayed with the supplies get a share along with those who fought.
1 Samuel 30 calls these selfish men wicked and worthless. David remembered that he didn't win the battle without God's help and that all he had came from God. This is an important reminder to us. We have given our lives and will to Daddy. We and all that we have are His. What He has given us is because of His great love for us. It is as much so that we can show His love for others as it is to feel His love for us. Let us not be like the wicked and worthless selfish men who want to keep what God has given us for ourselves, but let us, like David, always be quick to give blessing to others when we are blessed. I'm not talking about money, although that would be included, but everything, grace, joy, forgiveness, compassion, mercy, patience, love, and all else that Daddy shares with us.
