Many of us have at least one of those friends that we don't really keep in touch with, only visit with or communicate every few years but when we do run into each other it's as if we've never been apart. There's a great connection. We enjoy catching up and getting to know one another. We may even know that if we ever need help we can count on that friend and vice versa. But come on, as much as we love to praise such relationships in social media, this is not good friendship. Usually when we are talking about such a friend we'll say something along the lines of how so and so used to be our best friend once upon a time.
But we don't go years without communicating with a best friend. We visit, talk, text, at least comment on a Facebook post or Tweet regularly. Maybe not every day, but often. I talk to and with my best friend every single day. God wants to be closer to us than our best friend!
How awesome is that!? Imagine the God of the universe wants to be our best bestie! He actually loves us and desires intimacy with our hearts. He longs for relationship with us, and there is something within us that longs to know Him, to have relationship with Him. We can try to answer that desire with things and never know happiness, because nothing other than God can satisfy our innate desire for God, or we can ask Him to reveal His heart to us, seek to really get to know Him and find life. If we want is to know Him better, deeper and more intimately, we have to spend time with Him. It's that simple. We talk. We listen. We go through our day aware that we have a friend in God.
