Man, that's morbid. But I've been there, and I know that I am not alone. Life spirals downward into misery and hopelessness. Order decays into chaos and can not return. The rocks of the bottom rush up to greet us. Rock bottom is a frightening and miserable place, and it's easy to wonder, if God cares and loves me so much, where is He?
We;re lying broken and bloody on the rocks, and we know where we are. We're in hell. And obviously, God isn't in hell, so He's not here. He's up there, above, at the top of the cliff we fell from. So we do the only thing that makes sense. We climb. We try to leave the mess behind us. Though we are beyond weak, weary and wounded, we try to do what we could not do at our healthiest.
That's a worse mistake than what took us to the bottom. It dooms us to waste even more of what little is left in us to climb, which we can usually only do well enough to make it to a height that causes the inevitable fall to break us even more. If you're on the bottom, don't climb.
It's time to stop. Rest on the rock. I'm not saying pick up a shovel and dig. Don't continue in the chaos and the downward destruction. Rest on the Rock. Bedrock makes a great foundation, and when we stop trying to control our fall or climb from our pit, we find that it is on the rock of who Jesus is and Daddy's great love for us that we can finally stand and find stable footing.
He will give you rest, provide healing and stop the slide. Then, as restoration begins to take hold because of what He's done, He begins to lead us up the path we could not see before. The path that takes us out of the valley of the Shadow of death. And once your feet are on the path, not only do you no longer have to fear falling back to the bottom, but you can lead others to the path of escape. Jesus is the rock on which we stand and on which the life worth living is built strong enough to stand through any storm. So stop trying to climb. Rest.
