Unshackled Moments ~ August 8, 2018 ~ Looking For A Way Out

There is comfort in escape. We know this. And there are a thousand and one ways to escape the stress and cares of life. There's attention and sympathy from family and friends. Television. Movies. Shopping. Food. Sports. Hunting. Fishing. Sex. Drugs. Alcohol. Books. Affirmations. Denials. Music. Adrenaline. I could go on and on, for the list is as long and varied as people. Some of what we use to escape are good things. Some are good things used in a not so good way. Some are simply destructive.

Some of them work well. All of them are temporary. And none of them are ever enough. We fill ourselves and leak like a sieve. We always need more. Or different. Or new. Or.....We have spiritual Munchausen's. We kill ourselves slowly trying to survive and answer the emptiness of life.

But there is an answer. If we could only get a glimpse of the truth that Jesus truly understands and can empathize with us and what we are going through. If only we could understand how truly and deeply Daddy loves us, as we are and not as we should be. If only we could stop trying to fill and fix ourselves and turn quickly to the Spirit, who is called the Comforter for a reason.

Today, may we remember that He cares for us. That we can approach Him as we are because of what Jesus did. That He knows and cares about our hurts and fears and empty, barren places. He wants to comfort, heal, and restore us and give us a life worth living.

For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
- Hebrews 4:15-16
