When you're in a dark place, you sometimes tend to think you've been buried. Perhaps you've been planted. Bloom.

I saw this quote for the first time recently, and when I began searching to find who originally said it (I failed) I discovered that it is used many times as inspiration for memes. This makes a lot of sense considering how common it is to feel overwhelmed and defeated. We love stories of hardship not only endured but overcome. We seek out inspiration to give us hope when we feel we are buried beneath the weight of life.
But when it comes to the seed we are using for inspiration, what really is the difference between being buried and planted, between being left beneath the dirt to rot and rising to bloom? Well, the first thing is life. That seed may look dead to us, but there is life dormant within. No life, no bloom. But for you and I this is good news. We are alive. That means that we have the potential to rise and bloom. There is an essential second element that causes being buried to become being planted.
Within the seed there is something that tells it to push for and turn toward the sun. The presence of the sun coaxes the seed to grow and push through the soil, gives life and triggers the beautiful bloom. Without the sun, the seed would never grow, would never become something that could bloom, and what little life residing inside would die.
We do have life within us, and as long as it is there we have the potential to grow and bloom and become something amazing and beautiful, a unique reflection of our Creator. But it takes more than inspiring words and thoughts. We can't simply determine to bloom. We need the sun, or the Son rather. If you are feeling overwhelmed and buried, lost in the dark, remember that the Son is there. We may not see Him any more than the seed under the earth is exposed to the light of the sun, but He is there. If we turn to Him, even in the dark, He will give us life, cause us to grow, and yes, to bloom.
The difference between buried and planted is not our circumstances, it's not why or how we were buried, it is totally in whether or not, while under the dirt and weight of life, we turn to the Son.
